Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two overnight fires.
Selkirk Avenue Fire
At 9:54 p.m. on June 4, 2021, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a two-storey house in the 800 block of Selkirk Avenue.
Upon arrival on scene, crews found smoke and flames coming from the house. An offensive attack was initiated and the fire was declared under control at 10:13 p.m.
Crews completed a search of the house and no occupants were found. One neighbouring residence was temporarily evacuated as a precaution. No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are not available at this time.
Kate Street Fire
At 4:19 a.m. on June 5, 2021, WFPS responded to a monitored fire alarm for a two-storey, eight-suite apartment block in the 100 block of Kate Street.
When crews arrived at the address, they encountered smoke coming from the building and launched an offensive fire attack. The fire was declared under control at 4:53 a.m.
Most occupants of the structure safely self-evacuated. WFPS crews assisted one individual to safety. On-scene paramedics transported one patient to hospital in stable condition. One firefighter was injured in the line of duty and was also transported to hospital in stable condition.
Damage estimates are not currently available. Preliminary observations suggest the fire was accidental, caused by the careless disposal of smoking materials.
Every year the WFPS responds to fires caused by the improper disposal of smoking materials. Butts should always be extinguished in an ashtray or deep metal container. If smoking outdoors, butts should never be disposed of in planted pots or grass, or thrown from vehicle windows.
