Winnipeg, MB – At 9:58 p.m. on January 3, 2021, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a two-storey home in the 200 block of Atlantic Avenue.
When crews arrived on scene, they encountered smoke coming from the house. An offensive attack was launched and the fire was declared under control at 10:31 p.m.
The occupants of the home were alerted to the fire by a working smoke alarm which prompted them to self-evacuate before the arrival of WFPS crews. Two of the six occupants were assessed by on-scene paramedics but did not require transport to hospital.
The fire was determined to be accidental, caused by an overloaded and overheated extension cord. Residents are reminded that extension cords are designed for temporary use. WFPS recommends having a qualified electrician add more receptacles to a home so you do not have to use extension cords. If you do use them occasionally, care should be taken to never overload a cord or electrical socket. Extension cords are designed to dissipate heat along their length. They should never be bundled together or covered by carpets or other combustible items that can cause heat to accumulate. They should not be used where they may be subjected to mechanical damage such as in doorways or other locations they may get pinched or stepped on. Cords should be checked frequently and replaced if showing any signs of damage.
