Winnipeg, MB – Fifteen City-owned community centres will receive funding for renovations through the City of Winnipeg’s Community Centre Renovation Grant program (CCRGP).
“As the Province of Manitoba continues to reopen the economy, community centres will become important places for our residents again,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. "The Community Centre Renovation Grant program is an important City of Winnipeg resource that helps ensure our existing community assets are up-to-date, safe, and accessible so they can be enjoyed for years to come.”
The community centres receiving grants are:
- Dakota
- Fort Garry
- Garden City
- Gateway
- Glenwood
- Linden Woods
- Maples
- Melrose Park
- Northwood
- Roblin Park
- Sinclair Park
- St. Norbert
- Tyndall Park
- Vince Leah
- Wildwood
The CCRGP received 16 applications requesting a total of $1,165,157.91 during the spring 2020 intake period. Fifteen applications were approved, totaling $1,158,739.71.
“Community centres play an integral role in creating strong communities, as they provide recreational, cultural, and social activities,” said Councillor Sherri Rollins, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Protection, Community Services and Parks. “We are happy to provide funding that upgrades our centres to make them accessible and safe, while improving the well-being of Winnipeg residents.”
The program ensures that City-owned, board-run community centres can access much-needed assistance required to complete facility repairs, upgrades, retrofits, safety improvements, and renovation projects. The grant allows them the ability to set programming priorities.
The program has two intake periods each year: a spring intake in March and a fall intake in October. Spring 2020 was the seventeenth application period for the program. Since the program’s inception in 2012, the City has invested $8,821,624.99 toward 195 community centre applications for renovations across the city.
