Winnipeg, MB – At 9:54 p.m. on July 8, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in three-storey, walk-up apartment building in the 400 block of Furby Street. Upon arrival crews found smoke and flames. After knocking down some of the flames from the exterior, crews entered the building and launched an offensive attack. The fire was declared under control at 10:19 p.m. with crews able to confine it to the suite where it originated.

Occupants of the apartment block had self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. Most of the occupants were able to return to their suites after the fire was extinguished. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available at this time.

Parr Street Fire

At 4:22 a.m. on July 9, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in one and a half storey, single family home in the 300 block of Parr Street. Upon arrival at the scene, crews initiated an offensive, interior attack and had the fire under control by 4:56 a.m.

All occupants of the home had self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. No injuries were reported.

Preliminary observations suggest the cause of the fire was accidental due to the careless disposal of smoking materials. Residents are reminded to take extra care when disposing of smoking materials and always follow these tips:

  • Always use a deep, sturdy ashtray and place it away from anything that can burn.
  • Before you throw away butts and ashes, make sure they are out. Dousing them in water or sand is the best way to do that.
  • Never discard butts in vegetation, mulch, potted plants, landscaping or peat moss or other things that could easily ignite.
  • Keep cigarettes, lighters, matches, and other smoking materials up high out of the reach of children, in a locked cabinet.
