Winnipeg, MB – At 4:33 p.m. on May 5, 2019, WFPS crews responded to reports of a fire in a three storey apartment complex in the 500 block of Maryland Street. Once on scene crews quickly extinguished a small kitchen fire in a third floor suite. Damage was limited to the stove area and did not extend to the structure.
Paramedics assessed two patients on scene. They did not require transport to hospital. No other injuries were reported. Occupants of the building were able to return to their suites once crews ventilated smoke from the building.
Preliminary observations suggest the fire cause was accidental due to unattended cooking. Residents are reminded to always stay in the kitchen while cooking. Stove burners should always be turned off when leaving the kitchen, even for a short time. Anything that can catch fire — oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains — should always be kept away from the stovetop.
