Winnipeg, MB - The new Transcona Library officially opened today at 1 Transcona Blvd. The new 13,831 square foot library features an open and accessible floorplan with meeting and study spaces, a family literacy playground and children’s area, new shelving and furniture, and an outdoor reading deck and garden. The $6.5 million facility also features a 24/7 book return, as well as a living green wall which contributes to cleaner air.
“Libraries are a vital part of building healthy and thriving communities,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “Over the last several years, Council has approved significant investments in rebuilding libraries across Winnipeg, and it’s exciting that today we get to open the new Transcona library, providing an updated and accessible facility for people to meet, learn, and grow.”
Over the last two weeks, approximately 40,000 items including books, movies, music, and more, have been moved from the former library at 111 Victoria Ave. W. to the new location.
“The new Transcona Library is an exciting addition to our community,” said Shawn Nason, Councillor for Transcona. “This innovative building will inspire learning and literacy and be a gathering place for our community for many years to come.”
Construction for the new Transcona Library was identified as a priority in the Library Redevelopment Strategy, passed by Council in January 2013. The former Transcona Library was built in 1961, and had limited parking and accessibility, and a floor plan that could not meet the needs of today’s library users.
