Winnipeg, MB - Over recent days, many different thoughts have been expressed about refugees, and a lot of opinions have been volunteered on how countries should be responding to the humanitarian crisis facing Syria.
I firmly believe the ongoing Syrian humanitarian crisis requires support and assistance from countries and communities around the world. This includes Winnipeg.
As Winnipeg's Mayor, I want to welcome future Syrian refugees to Winnipeg.

I believe now is not the time to close our doors. Now is not the time to allow fear to triumph over hope and humanity. Now, more than ever, is a time for compassion. It is a time for us to embrace our values of openness and acceptance.
As Canada plans and prepares for the arrival of refugees, I believe Winnipeg is ready to do its part to welcome new families to our community, and help ensure they receive the supports they need to settle into a Winnipeg, and Canadian, way of life.
I have spoken with Premier Greg Selinger and federal Immigration Minister John McCallum to express my support for their efforts. As a city, we will continue to work collaboratively with our federal and provincial counterparts, as well as non-government organizations, to ensure refugees arriving are connected with the services and supports necessary to transition to a new life and home.
