Winnipeg, MB – At 10:11 a.m. on Saturday, March 13, 2021, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in two-storey townhouse building in the first 100 block of Elkhorn Street.
Upon arrival on scene, crews encountered smoke coming from the structure and launched an offensive attack. Due to worsening conditions, crews were forced to exit the structure and transition to a defensive attack. The fire was declared under control at 11:08 a.m.
Most occupants of the townhouse complex self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. The remaining occupants, and those in a neighbouring townhouse complex, were evacuated by crews. The WFPS Major Incident Response Vehicle (MIRV) and Winnipeg Transit buses were deployed to the scene to shelter evacuees. No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are not available at this time but are considered significant. The neighbouring building also suffered moderate heat damage to its exterior.
