Are you interested in learning more about the history of Winnipeg?
This week we are launching the Winnipeg 150 anniversary exhibit on the main floor of the Millennium Library, located at 251 Donald St.
The exhibit features images from collections at the City of Winnipeg Archives, Winnipeg Public Library (Community Services), Manitoba Museum, Archives of Manitoba / Hudson’s Bay Company Archives, and other sources.
“Winnipeg has always been a place of connection,” said Murray Peterson, a Heritage Officer with the City of Winnipeg’s Planning, Property and Development department.
“We hope that people who come to visit the exhibit will see how Winnipeg has been an important place for community and gathering as well as a commercial, transportation, and cultural hub throughout its history.”
The exhibit features a number of themes, including Indigenous histories and contributions, Winnipeg’s location in the centre of Canada, its role as a transportation and commercial hub, and the history of our municipal government.
It can be viewed anytime during the library’s open hours until April 28, 2024.
In tandem with a host of archival images in the exhibit, Winnipeg Public Library staff have put together an adjacent display of library history and curated lists of books to borrow.
“These resources will help foster further learning and understanding about what Winnipeg’s storied past,” said Kathleen Williams, the Administrative Coordinator of Adult Programs and Outreach for the Winnipeg Public Library.
The exhibit was prepared by City staff at the City Archives, Planning Property and Development Department, Winnipeg Public Library, and other contributors.
