How to recycle your real Christmas tree

Bring it to a Let’s Chip In depot

A pile of old Christmas trees.
Over the past 32 years, we have recycled over 418,942 Christmas trees. That works out to be 1,905 tonnes of material diverted from the landfill.

If you’ve opted to have a real Christmas tree and are wondering what to do with it once the holidays wind down, consider recycling it at one of our Let’s Chip In depots.

Trees are being collected from December 27 until January 31 at 10 locations around Winnipeg. Hours of the sites vary and in some cases are open 24 hours a day.

Only the tree should be left at the depot. Make sure to remove all decorations tinsel, and the stand at home. The tree must also not be in a bag.

The trees are then turned into wood chip mulch available for pick up from the temporary depots starting in early January. The mulch is free, while quantities last, but you have to bring your own container. Mulch is not available at the 4R Winnipeg Depots.

Once the temporary depots close on January 31, Christmas trees will continue to be collected year-round at the three 4R Winnipeg Depots.

Over the past 32 years, we have recycled over 418,942 Christmas trees. That works out to be 1,905 tonnes of material diverted from the landfill.
