Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two structure fires this evening, Sunday, August 20, 2023.
Andrews Street fire
At 5 p.m., the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a two-storey house in the 200 block of Andrews Street.
Upon arrival on scene, crews found smoke coming from the building and one person who was trapped on the upper floor. The person was rescued from the second storey window. All other occupants safely evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. No injuries were reported.
Crews entered the house and fought the fire from inside, declaring the fire under control at 5:25 p.m.
At this time, no damage estimates are available. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Elgin Avenue fire
At 6:16 p.m., WFPS crews responded to reports of a fire in a vacant, two-storey house in the 400 block of Elgin Avenue.
When crews arrived to the scene, heavy smoke was observed coming from the house. Crews initially launched an interior fire attack, but due to deteriorating conditions, they were forced to exit the house and fight the fire from outside. Once conditions improved, they were able to re-enter the house to fully extinguish the fire. The fire was declared under control at 7:26 p.m.
Firefighters completed a search of the house and did not locate any occupants. No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are not currently available.
The house had previous fires in January, May and June of 2023.
