Winnipeg, MB – On Friday, November 22, 2024, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to a carbon monoxide event and a structure fire.
Evergreen Place carbon monoxide event
At 8:12 a.m., WFPS responded to reports of a carbon monoxide alarm sounding in a high-rise residential building on Evergreen Place.
Firefighters responded and took initial readings inside the building and found carbon monoxide levels of up to 15 parts per million in some areas. At the same time, firefighters helped some residents in the building evacuate to a safe area. Firefighters directed other residents to shelter in place.
Fire crews ventilated the building. Paramedics responded and no residents required treatment or transportation to the hospital. Residents were able to return to their suites.
Preliminary observations suggest the cause of the exposure may have been related to the heating system in the building.
Carbon Monoxide Safety
Exposure to carbon monoxide gas can be deadly for people and pets. Carbon monoxide has no smell, taste, or colour and is released when a fossil fuel does not burn completely.
Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, confusion, weakness, difficulty hearing or seeing, shortness of breath, but no fever.
Every home should have a carbon monoxide alarm installed on every level and outside each sleeping area. If your alarm sounds, or if you think someone has been exposed to carbon monoxide, leave the building and call 9-1-1.
