Young Street fire
At 12:19 a.m. on Sunday, March 3, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a two-storey house in the 400 block of Young Street.
When crews arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the home. Due to dangerous conditions, they could not enter the home. They launched an exterior fire attack, using an aerial ladder truck to apply water to the fire. The weather created challenging conditions for firefighters, as the area around the scene was ice-covered and slippery.
The fire was declared under control at 1:35 a.m.
Some residents in nearby homes were evacuated temporarily, but were able to return to their homes after the fire was out. A Winnipeg Transit bus was deployed to the scene to provide shelter to the evacuees. No injuries were reported.
Emergency demolition of the structure was ordered due to extensive fire, smoke, and water damage. No damage estimates are available at this time. The fire remains under investigation.
Young Street will be closed Sunday morning between Sargent Avenue and Ellice Avenue until the demolition can be completed.
Once the road re-opens, residents are asked to exercise caution in the area, as water used to fight the fire has frozen and created slippery conditions.
