Winnipeg, MB – At 2:55 p.m. on Friday, March 10, 2023, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a three-storey apartment building in the 100 block of Greenway Crescent West.
When crews arrived at the scene, they located a small fire involving a commercial-sized hot water tank. It was quickly extinguished.
Occupants of the building safely self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. No injuries were reported.
Preliminary observations suggest the fire was accidental, caused by an electrical malfunction in the hot water tank. To prevent fires of this type, follow these tips:
- Have your water heater installed and regularly inspected by a qualified professional.
- Keep the area around the water heater clutter-free, keeping at least three feet of open space around it. Ensure the area is well-ventilated.
- Keep flammable materials such as paint cans and oily rags away from the water heater.
- Know how to shut your water heater off.
