Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to two fires this morning.
Main Street fire
At 4:36 a.m. on Saturday, February 18, 2023, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a two-storey hotel in the 600 block of Main Street.
When crews arrived at the scene, they found smoke coming from the building. They entered and fought the fire from inside, while also evacuating occupants from several suites. The fire was declared under control at 4:53 a.m.
One individual was assessed by Paramedics but did not require transport to hospital. No other injuries were reported.
Damage from the fire was primarily contained to combustible contents in the suite where the fire originated. Damage estimates are not available at this time.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Manitoba Avenue fire
At 6:08 a.m. on Saturday, February 18, 2023, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a single-family bungalow in the 300 block of Manitoba Avenue.
Upon arrival on scene, crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the house. They entered the house and quickly worked to ensure all occupants were evacuated. With dangerous fire conditions present, they exited the house and fought the fire from the exterior. The fire was declared under control at 9:02 a.m.
One neighbouring home was temporarily evacuated as a precaution. No injuries were reported. Winnipeg Transit deployed a bus to the scene to provide shelter for the evacuated residents. The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services team was also deployed to the scene to assist the displaced residents in finding temporary accommodations.
Damage estimates are not available at this time but the house sustained significant damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
