Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two structure fires this morning.

Marion Street fire

At 6:15 a.m. on Friday, October 21, 2022, the WFPS responded to a monitored fire alarm activation in a 16-storey, high-rise apartment building at 101 Marion Street.

When crews arrived on scene they found heavy smoke in the building. Due to the significant safety concerns involved when dealing with a large structure, a second alarm was called which increased the number of apparatus on scene.

Crews launched an offensive fire attack, declaring the fire extinguished at 7:53 a.m. Firefighters were aided by the use of Flameguard X-Tinguish Fire Suppression Tool (FST), an aerosol device that reduces temperatures, which allows for safer access. The FST generates a mist that expands to flood the space, suppressing flames within seconds.

Paramedics assessed approximately 15 individuals at the scene. Three patients were transported to hospital – one in critical condition and two in unstable condition.

Fire damage was mostly contained to one floor in the building, but other areas of the building suffered significant smoke and water damage. At this time, it is not known how many suites are impacted, or how many residents will be displaced. Representatives from Manitoba Housing are on scene to arrange alternate accommodations for displaced residents.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Roslyn Road fire

At 6:44 a.m. on October 21, 2022, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a vacant three-storey building in the 0 to 100 block of Roslyn Road.

Upon arrival on scene, crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure. An offensive attack was launched and the fire was declared under control at 7:02 a.m.

Crews completed a search of the building and no occupants were found. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are not available at this time.
