Winnipeg, MB – The following are updates on fires that occurred on Furby Street and Quelch Street earlier today.
Furby Street
At 12:22 a.m. on Friday, October 14, 2022, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to a fire in a multi-unit residential building in the 500 block of Furby Street.
Crews fought the fire from the exterior of the building. It was extinguished at 10:20 a.m.
No injuries were reported. The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services team assisted ten residents in finding temporary alternative accommodations.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, and the building is considered to be a complete loss.
Quelch Street
At 5:41 a.m. on Friday, October 14, 2022, the WFPS responded to a fire in a two-storey apartment building in the 100 block of Quelch Street.
Crews worked at the scene throughout the day using aerial ladders to drown out the fire. It was extinguished at 2:14 p.m. The structural integrity of the building is believed to be damaged, posing a safety risk. As such, arrangements are being made for the building to be demolished.
No injuries were reported. Two cats from the building are considered missing, but crews reported seeing cats that matched their descriptions near the scene. Neighbourhood residents are asked to contact the Winnipeg Humane Society if they find a lost tuxedo (black and white) cat or a grey cat.
All roads in the area have re-opened and access to Weston School has been restored.
The fire remains under investigation, and no damage estimates are available at this time.
