Winnipeg, MB – At 2:20 a.m. on Saturday, May 28, 2022, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a vacant two-storey apartment building in the 100 block of Mayfair Avenue.
When crews arrived on scene, they encountered a well-involved fire with heavy smoke and flames coming from the building. A defensive attack using aerial ladders was launched, as it was unsafe for firefighters to enter the structure. The building had suffered multiple previous fires, and the heavy fire conditions combined with the previous fire damage increased the risk of collapse.
The fire was declared under control at 3:43 a.m.; however, crews are expected to remain on scene throughout the morning extinguishing hot spots. Traffic on Mayfair Avenue will be impacted until this work is complete.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Damage estimates are not available at this time, but the building will be a complete loss.
