Winnipeg, MB – On Sunday, April 25 at 10 p.m., crews will begin the annual city-wide spring cleanup. Over the next five to six weeks, Winnipeg’s entire street network, including bridges and sidewalks will be cleaned, as well as designated active transportation pathways, boulevards, and medians. Crews will also clean up litter and debris in City parks. The major operation involves over 300 pieces of equipment, and approximately 500 workers.
Accessing information about the annual spring cleanup operation is easier than ever for Winnipeggers with winnipeg.ca/springcleanup, which features everything residents need to know about the City’s spring cleanup activities.
The portal includes information about safety tips, a comprehensive FAQ, and most notably a searchable spring cleanup progress map that displays information on when residential streets (Priority 3) are scheduled for sweeping 24-hours in advance of scheduled operations, and when crews have completed the work.
Residents are also encouraged to download and use the Know Your Zone app this spring to stay in the know about our spring cleanup operations and temporary parking restrictions. Residents can add their favourite addresses in the app to receive Spring Cleanup Alerts in advance of planned operations.
The City’s official Know Your Zone app is available for free download for android devices at the Google Play App Store, and for Apple devices at the Apple App Store.
Parking restrictions & enforcement
When a residential street is scheduled for sweeping, residents are urged to find an alternate place to park such as an off-street driveway or parking lot. This will help the City’s spring cleanup operation run smoothly and will prevent you from being ticketed and towed.
The cost of a parking ticket is $150 ($112.50 if paid within 14 days), and the cost of a tow is $120.23. Please note that not all streets get “No parking” signs ahead of cleanup operations – these are typically only placed on streets that present challenges for crews. That’s why it’s very important to routinely check your street for signs, check the progress update map, and use the Know Your Zone app, and move your vehicle to avoid being ticketed or towed.
Yard waste
Residents are urged to not rake yard waste material or other debris onto streets as this can plug drains and cause ponding problems as well as increase the risk of basement flooding. Debris should be put out for regular garbage collection. Compostable yard waste material (e.g., grass clippings, leaves) can be placed out for yard waste collection in any reusable containers without a lid, cardboard boxes, or paper yard waste bags.
This year's curbside yard waste collection program will start the week of April 19 for homes in yard waste collection area "A," and will begin the week of April 26 for homes in yard waste collection area "B.” Residents can also drop off yard waste for free at one of the City’s 4R Winnipeg Depots. Yard waste is collected at the curb once every two weeks, on the same day as recycling and garbage.
