Winnipeg, MB – Committed to a future of providing transportation improvements and a connected network of pedestrian and cycling infrastructure in Winnipeg, the Government of Canada in partnership with the City of Winnipeg officially announce the opening of the West Alexander to East Exchange Corridor which will expand the pedestrian and cycling network and improve transportation options in Winnipeg for people of all ages and abilities.
New protected bike lanes along McDermot Avenue and Bannatyne Avenue from Waterfront Drive to Sherbrook Street provide a safer, more comfortable experience for cyclists and pedestrians. The bike lanes include adjustable concrete curbs, and other safety features including green paint to demarcate cycling lanes that cross intersections and dedicated bike signals.
“The Government of Canada recognizes that providing accessible active transportation options is key to developing green inclusive communities,” said Robert-Falcon Oulette, Member of Parliament for Winnipeg Centre, on behalf of the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities. “We are proud to have helped make these protected bike lanes possible, which will provide a safer route for cyclists along some of Winnipeg’s busiest roads, and encourage people to stay active while moving around the City.”

The key improvements include:
- Construction of the West Alexander to East Exchange bike lanes, which started in early June 2018 and completed in September 2018
- Construction of adjustable protected bike lanes on McDermot Avenue and Bannatyne Avenue
- Conversion of parallel parking to back-in angled parking on:
- Adelaide Street between William Avenue and McDermot Avenue
- McDermot Avenue between Main Street and Waterfront Drive
- Bannatyne Avenue between Main Street and Waterfront Drive
The City is continuing to work on additional back-in angled parking on James Avenue, Rupert Avenue, Hargrave Street, and Albert Street.
The total cost of the West Alexander to East Exchange Corridor Project is approximately $4 million, of which the Government of Canada is providing $1.75 million.
The City received cost sharing funds for four pedestrian and cycling projects through the Government of Canada’s Public Transit Infrastructure Fund (PTIF). These projects support multi-modal transportation connections to public transit in Winnipeg.
