Winnipeg, MB – At 8:52 p.m. on Tuesday, October 9, 2018, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) crews responded to a report of a fire at a two-storey hotel in the 600-block of Main Street. Upon arrival, crews found that building sprinkler systems had successfully extinguished most of the fire, limiting damage from the flames but causing extensive water damage. Considerable heavy smoke existed throughout the building.
All occupants of the building had self-evacuated prior to crews’ arrival. A Winnipeg Transit bus was used to provide shelter while WFPS crews completed their work in the building to ensure it was safe for re-occupancy. All occupants were assessed by WFPS crews and it was determined that no injuries or illness were evident as a result of the fire or smoke.
The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services responded to ensure the well-being of occupants displaced by the fire and water damage.
The cause of the fire is under investigation and no damage estimates are available at this time.
