Investment of $2.6 million will replace ceiling, lighting, and public address system

Winnipeg, MB - The Pan Am Pool, Winnipeg’s premier aquatic facility, is set to receive a major capital investment beginning in summer 2018, as City officials work to replace the pool’s 51-year-old ceiling, lighting, and public address system. Replacement of these important interior components will cost approximately $2.6 million and will ensure that the Pan Am Pool remains a safe and enjoyable facility for many years to come.

“The Pan Am Pool is one of Winnipeg’s most highly used recreation facilities and it has served our community well in its 51 years of service,” said Jenn Sarna, Manager of Aquatic Services for the City of Winnipeg. “The pool is a popular practice location for many of our city’s competitive swim and dive programs. This capital project improves not only the ceiling, but the lighting and the public address system which are important for the public’s safety during competitions and day-to-day use.”

City officials will work to keep sections of the facility open during construction when safe to do so. To help minimize effects of the closure on sport clubs, swimming lesson participants, active living members, general use patrons and private service providers, the Public Service is working to identify other City pool and recreation locations with available space.

The project is scheduled to begin during the pool’s regular annual maintenance shutdown which will start at the end of July 2018. While the duration of the capital construction project has not been finalized, it is anticipated that the work may take until the end of 2018 to complete. The largest portion of the project, the replacement of the ceiling, will be the primary determinant for the length of the closure.

The project budget of $2.6 million is based on a Class 3 estimate and was approved by Council as a first call on the 2019 Capital Budget.
