Winnipeg, MB - Today, Winnipeg Transit launched its new electronic fare collection system ‘peggo’ which will operate on all transit buses using reloadable fare cards and readers. The new fare card will be rolled out in phases, with seniors as the first group to use their peggo cards starting July 4, followed by full fare and youth passengers in early August.
“Moving to the use of reusable plastic cards for transit will be more efficient for riders and drivers alike,” said Indigenous and Municipal Relations Minister Eileen Clark-. -“Whether riders use electronic passes or load cash onto their cards, it will make it easier for people to choose to use Winnipeg Transit.”
“The City of Winnipeg is committed to providing Winnipeggers with convenient, reliable and accessible transit,” said Councillor Janice Lukes. “The new electronic fare collection system is simple and easy to use and will improve the transit experience for both riders and operators.”
The peggo card is quick, convenient and easy to use. Riders will simply tap their card against the peggo card reader on the farebox, wait for the beep, and go.
peggo cards can be purchased in person at any 7-Eleven or Shoppers Drug Mart store, online or over the phone.
There are two types of fares which can be loaded onto peggo cards:
- e-passes - replace paper passes and are valid for an unlimited number of trips during a set number of consecutive days. Transit offers e-passes that range from 24 hours in length all the way up to an annual pass.
- e-cash - replaces paper tickets. Riders can load e-cash onto their peggo cards, which deducts e-cash fares from the card when it is tapped on the farebox. When paying using e-cash, a 75-minute transfer is automatically loaded onto the peggo card so paper transfers are no longer required.
Riders will still be able to pay cash for fares.
A peggo card can be purchased for $5, but for a limited time, riders can receive a $5 e-cash rebate. If a rider registers their peggo card online during the launch period and then uses the card within 90 days of purchase, the $5 cost of the card will be transferred to the card as e-cash.
The total budget for the new electronic fare collection system, which included the installation of new fare boxes, is $17.7 million.
The province is providing a total of $7 million to the City of Winnipeg for the new automated Transit Fare Collection System through the Manitoba Winnipeg Infrastructure Fund.
