Winnipeg, MB - The public service is recommending an adjustment be made to the City’s financial contribution to support the construction of the new Jonathan Toews Fieldhouse to be located adjacent to the Jonathan Toews Community Centre in South St. Vital.
In a report going forward to the City’s Standing Policy Committee on Property and Development, a recommendation is being made that the 2013 capital budget entitled “Jonathan Toews Community Centre Fieldhouse” be revised to a capital grant of $13.7 million, representing contributions from the City ($6.7 million) and the Province ($7.0 million), with Dakota Community Centre to finance the remaining $4.2 million of the total $17.9 million project budget.
The project was officially announced in February 2013 by the City, Province and Dakota Community Centre Inc.
The City’s capital funding contribution to the Fieldhouse project reinforces the City of Winnipeg’s ongoing commitment to supporting and developing sports and recreation facilities, ensuring they are accessible to all residents of the community.
The proposed Jonathan Toews Community Centre Fieldhouse addition will enable Dakota Community Centre Inc. to expand current programming and provide needed recreational and sport facilities for St. Vital and the City of Winnipeg.
The new facility will be a multi-use sports hall comprising three indoor fields of play and a mezzanine level running track. It will be capable of staging numerous sports programs/events with a primary focus on volleyball and basketball.
Construction of the new Fieldhouse is anticipated to begin in Fall 2015 and is anticipated to open in late 2016 or early 2017.
The report will be considered by the Property and Development Committee on June 2, 2015.
