Water quality test results
We test Winnipeg drinking water to ensure compliance with our Operating Licence, the regulations
and Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality
. These guidelines apply to treated water only, that is, fresh water that people consume from a cold water tap. Therefore, the majority of the guidelines do not apply to the tests we take on the raw water at Shoal Lake and the Water Treatment Plant because Winnipeg residents don't consume the water directly from either of these locations. The exception is the test results for herbicides, pesticides and PCBs at the Water Treatment Plant raw. The guidelines apply to treated water but we test the water at the Water Treatment Plant raw because the water distribution system downstream from this point is a closed system that should prevent the water from being contaminated by these chemicals. If you would like more information on water quality, visit Health Canada
