Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to seven overnight fires – six of them involving vacant properties.
Anyone who sees someone actively entering a vacant building, or removing boards from windows or doors from a building, should call 911 to report the incident immediately.
If you notice breached windows or doors but do not see anyone actively entering or trying to enter the building, report the incident to 311 by phone or online.
Lock Street fire
At 7:55 p.m. on Monday, May 11, 2026, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a single-storey house in the 300 block of Lock Street.
When crews arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the house. They launched an offensive fire attack, entering the house to apply water to the flames. The fire was declared under control at 8:30 p.m.
Firefighters located one individual in the house and brought the person out. The individual was transported to hospital in critical condition. A cat was located deceased.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Damage estimates are not available, though the house is believed to be a complete loss.
St Johns Avenue
At 12:27 a.m. on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, WFPS crews responded to reports of a fire in a vacant, one-and-a-half storey house in the 600 block of St. Johns Avenue.
When crews arrived on scene, they found smoke and flames coming from the house. They entered and launched an interior fire attack, declaring the fire under control at 12:54 a.m.
Firefighters searched the house and no occupants were found. No injuries were reported.
The fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are not available.
Powers Street fire
At 12:34 a.m. on Tuesday, May 11, 2026, WFPS crews responded to reports of a fire in a vacant, two-storey house and adjacent garage in the 200 block of Powers Street.
Upon arrival on scene, crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the house and garage. Crews fought the fire from the exterior as it was not safe to enter. The fire was declared under control at 1:07 a.m.
No injuries were reported. The fire is under investigation.
The house was previously damaged by several fires, including fires in May 2025 and September 2023.
Boyd Avenue fire
At 12:46 a.m. on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, WFPS crews responded to reports of a fire in a vacant one-and-a-half storey house in the 600 block of Boyd Avenue.
Upon arrival on scene, crews found smoke and flames coming from the house. Firefighters initially launched an exterior fire attack, but once conditions improved, they entered the house and transitioned to an interior fire attack. The fire was declared under control at 1:15 a.m.
Firefighters searched the house and no occupants were found. No injuries were reported.
The fire is under investigation. The house was previously damaged by a fire in November 2025
Manitoba Avenue fire
At 1:08 a.m. on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a vacant one-and-a-half storey house in the 800 block of Manitoba Avenue.
When crews arrived at the scene, they found smoke and flames coming from the house. They entered and fought the fire from the interior. The fire was declared under control at 1:41 a.m.
A search of the house was completed and no occupants were found. There were no injuries reported.
The fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are not available.
Alexander Avenue fire
The WFPS responded to two separate fires at a vacant property in the 1500 block of Alexander Avenue.
At 1:51 a.m., crews responded to a detached garage fire. It was quickly extinguished and no injuries were reported.
The call for a second fire involving the single-storey house came in at 3:23 a.m. Crews arrived and quickly extinguished a fire. No injuries were reported.
