Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) recently responded to two structure fires.

Furby Street fire
At 9:39 p.m. on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a one-and-a-half storey house in the 600 block of Furby Street.

When crews arrived to the scene, they found smoke in the house. They entered and fought the fire from inside the house. The fire was declared under control at 10 p.m. The fire was contained to the room where it started.

All occupants of the house self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. One individual was assessed by paramedics but did not require transport to hospital. No other injuries were reported.

The fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are not available at this time.

Kanata Street fire
At 3:45 a.m. on Thursday, June 20, 2024, WFPS crews responded to reports of a fire in a two-storey, single-family house in the 500 block of Kanata Street.

Upon arrival at the scene, crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the house. They initially entered to fight the fire from the interior, but due to deteriorating conditions they were forced to exit the house. They transitioned to a defensive fire attack, using an aerial ladder truck to apply water to the fire. The WFPS drone was launched and the images were used to direct crews to hotspots.

Once conditions improved, crews were able to enter the house to complete extinguishment of the fire. The fire was declared under control at 5:28 a.m.

Occupants from the house safely self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. No injuries were reported.

There were three cats in the residence which are currently unaccounted for. Neighbourhood residents are asked to contact the Winnipeg Humane Society if they find a lost cat in the area.

The fire is under investigation. The house has suffered significant smoke, fire, and water damage. Damage estimates are not available.
