First phase of program includes $25 million in grants available to support affordable housing and Downtown projects

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg has launched the Housing Accelerator Fund Capital Grant Program and developers can now submit grant applications for funding support of eligible housing projects. The grant program is one of the City’s action plan initiatives under the Housing Accelerator Fund.

There is $25 million available in grant funding through the first phase of the Capital Grant Program. This phase of the program will be focused on projects that create new housing in the following categories:

  • Downtown market projects
  • Downtown non-profit/affordable housing
  • Affordable housing projects located outside of downtown

Grant applications will be accepted until July 12, 2024. Applicants will need to demonstrate the ability to secure a building permit within one year of approval.

“Last December, the federal government announced that we were providing $122 million to the City of Winnipeg through the Housing Accelerator Fund, to get more homes built that our city urgently needs,” said the Honourable Dan Vandal, Minister of Northern Affairs and Minister responsible for PrairiesCan on behalf of The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities. “Today, we see how that funding is helping remove barriers to housing supply, accelerating the growth of supply, and helping to build affordable and sustainable communities. The launch of this new grant program is just one initiative among many, that will help build new affordable housing projects across Winnipeg.”

“We're looking for developers and non-profit housing agencies to bring forward their most innovative and creative proposals,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham. “Our goal is to maximize the number of units built, making a meaningful impact on our downtown residential population and ensuring more Winnipeggers have access to safe, affordable homes.”

The Capital Grant Program is being funded by the Housing Accelerator Fund, a National Housing Strategy program launched in 2023 by the Government of Canada through the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.
