Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two fires on the morning of Monday, February 12, 2024.
Keewatin Avenue
At 4:43 a.m., the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a single-storey commercial structure in the 1000 block of Keewatin Avenue.
When crews arrived to the scene, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure. Due to advanced fire conditions, crews launched a defensive fire attack from the exterior of the building.
They used aerial ladder trucks and handlines to apply water to the fire. Aerial and thermal imaging views from the WFPS drone were used to help direct water streams and locate hotspots.
It is expected that crews will remain on scene well into the day as they work to fully extinguish the fire. Keewatin Street will remain closed until work at the scene is complete.
The building has suffered significant fire and water damage. Damage estimates are not available at this time.
The fire is under investigation.
Elgin Avenue fire
At 6:10 a.m., WFPS crews responded to reports of a fire involving two vacant two-storey houses in the 400 block of Elgin Avenue.
Upon arrival of scene, crews found a well-involved fire consuming the two vacant houses and threatening a third house which was occupied. Firefighters worked quickly to evacuate residents from the third house as a precaution.
Crews launched a defensive fire attack using an aerial ladder truck and handlines. The fire is under control at this time, but crews will remain on scene for some time putting out hot spots.
Both houses have extensive damage from previous fires and are considered a complete loss. Demolition of both structures is being arranged. Elgin Avenue will remain closed until the demolition is complete later today.
The fire is under investigation.
