Winnipeg, MB – At 2:20 p.m. on Wednesday, January 24, 2024, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a single-family bungalow in the 1800 block of Elgin Avenue.
Upon arrival on scene, crews found the structure fully involved with smoke and flames. Due to the heavy fire conditions, crews launched a defensive fire attack, using an aerial ladder truck to apply water to the fire. They briefly entered the home; however, due to unsafe conditions, they were forced to exit again and continue applying water from the exterior.
All occupants of the house safely self-evacuated. No injuries were reported.
The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services (ESS) team was deployed to assist displaced residents in finding temporary accommodations.
The structural integrity of the house was compromised, so WFPS arranged for the emergency demolition of the building.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
