Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two recent structure fires.
Stella Avenue fire
At 6:47 p.m. on Saturday, January 20, 2024, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a one-and-a-half storey, single-family house in the 500 block of Stella Avenue.
When crews arrived to the scene, they found a well-involved fire with heavy smoke and flames coming from the house. They launched a fire attack from the exterior of the structure. Once some of the flames were knocked down, they were able to enter the house to finish fighting the fire. The fire was declared under control at 8:37 p.m.
All occupants of the house safely self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. No injuries were reported.
The house sustained significant smoke, fire, and water damage. Damage estimates are not available at this time.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Sutherland Avenue fire
At 9:45 a.m. on Sunday, January 21, 2024, WFPS crews responded to reports of a fire in a large, vacant industrial building on Sutherland Avenue between Maple Street North and Argyle Street North.
The building was previously gutted by a fire on July 4, 2023. At that time, WFPS deemed the building to be a complete loss due to extreme fire, smoke, and water damage that left it partially collapsed. Sections of the building were demolished in that incident to assist firefighters in accessing hotspots to extinguish the fire. Additional damage has occurred due to several additional fires since then.
Upon arrival to the scene today, firefighters found heavy smoke and flames coming from part of the building. They entered and fought the fire from the interior of the structure. The fire was declared under control at 11:15 a.m. Crews are expected to remain on scene into this evening putting out hotspots.
Crews completed a search of the area where the fire occurred and no occupants were located. No injuries were reported.
The fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are not available.
