Winnipeg, MB – At 1:05 a.m. on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a two-and-a-half storey multi-family residence in the 300 block of College Avenue.
When crews arrived to the scene they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure. They made entry and attacked the fire from the interior, declaring the fire extinguished at 2:08 a.m.
Firefighters searched the building and located one individual. The individual was declared deceased at the scene. All other residents self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. Two of them were assessed at the scene by paramedics and transported to hospital in unstable condition.
A Winnipeg Transit bus was sent to the scene to provide shelter for evacuees. The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services (ESS) team was also deployed to assist displaced residents in finding temporary accommodations.
The fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are not available at this time.
