Winnipeg, MB – At 8:25 p.m. on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a garage fire in the 400 block of Agnes Street.
When crews arrived at the scene, they found that the fire had spread to three neighbouring structures – a two-storey single family home, a vacant two-storey house on Agnes Street, and a four-storey apartment building on Victor Street.
Crews witnessed heavy smoke and flames coming from the occupied residence on Agnes Street. They initially attacked the fire from inside the house but due to dangerous fire conditions, they were forced to exit and transition to a defensive attack. Once conditions improved, they were able to re-enter the house to complete extinguishment of the fire. The fire involving the Victor Street building and the vacant house on Agnes were quickly knocked down. The fire in all structures was declared under control at 9:10 p.m.
Residents in the occupied Agnes Street house safely self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. Firefighters searched the other two structures and no occupants were found. No injuries were reported. The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services (ESS) team helped displaced residents in finding temporary accommodations.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are not currently available.
