Winnipeg, MB – The newly constructed four season washrooms located in La Barriere Park are now open to the public. The new washroom facility replaces the original seasonal public washrooms, which were constructed in the mid-1960s.

“La Barriere Park is a hidden gem in our City parks system! As South Winnipeg continues to grow, more and more residents are discovering La Barriere Park and the many recreational opportunities it offers. The La Salle River offers fishing, canoeing and kayaking, there are baseball diamonds, picnic areas, pathways, Frisbee golf and new cricket fields,” said Councillor Janice Lukes, Waverley West Ward. “The new public washrooms we are adding will make visiting the park an even more comfortable experience for all.”

“La Barriere Park is a Regional park, “said Councillor Sherri Rollins, Fort Rouge – East Fort Garry Ward, “It’s great to see the collaboration of all south-end Councillors working to improve the park.”

“There are four of these orphan parks that are not part of any Councillor’s ward,” said Councillor Brian Mayes, St. Vital Ward, “It’s great to see Councillor Lukes push for this project in La Barriere Park.”

"On November 1st 1869 the Metis “barred” the passageway of representatives from the Government of Canada who were trying to access Fort Garry to establish a new government," said Markus Chambers, City Councillor, St. Norbert – Seine River, "This intervention by the Metis forged the discussions that resulted in Manitoba. Today we celebrate the natural attributes of La Barriere Park, a gathering place for all cultures to participate in a diverse variety of sports, recreational activities and cultural celebrations!"

The new facility includes two universal toilet rooms that are fully accessible, and will operate year-round. An open air vestibule provides park visitors with shelter from inclement weather while also creating a spacious entrance to the washroom. The new building is located in a visible section of the park, off the main parking lot, near the sports fields and picnic areas.

The project was completed for $500K from the Public Works Department’s capital budget.
