Winnipeg, MB – A park in Charleswood now celebrates curling excellence in Winnipeg.

Today, Councillor Evan Duncan and Councillor Brian Mayes were joined by curling champion Dawn McEwen to unveil the newly renamed park. Formerly named Berkley Square Park, Dawn McEwen Park is located at 635 Berkley St.

“Renaming Berkley Square Park to Dawn McEwen Park is a meaningful way to honour an extraordinary athlete and community member who has brought immense pride to Winnipeg and our Charleswood community,” said Evan Duncan, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Property and Development. “Dawn’s Olympic gold medal and achievements on the world stage reflect years of commitment, teamwork, and perseverance—values that truly embody the spirit of our neighbourhood. This park will serve as a lasting tribute to her legacy and to what can be accomplished through dedication and community pride.”

“It’s not every day that a Winnipegger wins an Olympic gold medal,” said Brian Mayes, Councillor for St. Vital. “The City of Winnipeg recognized Jill Officer and Jennifer Jones with park namings some years ago. I am delighted to take part in recognizing Dawn McEwen, and later this month Kaitlyn Lawes, with parks named in their honour. I once heard Jennifer Jones call Dawn “the best lead in the world” and that’s a pretty good honor, too, if you are a Manitoba curler.”

Dawn McEwen was born in Ottawa, Ontario and moved to Winnipeg in 2007. McEwen was the long-time lead for team Jennifer Jones, curling out of the St. Vital Curling Club. She is a five-time Scotties Tournament of Hearts champion, two-time world champion, and 2014 Winter Olympics gold medalist.

“Having a park renamed after me is really humbling,” said Dawn McEwen. “It's more than just a park, it's a place where our community comes together, and it's extra special because I can bring my children here to enjoy it too. I'm so grateful to be part of this neighborhood and to see the park continue to be a place everyone can enjoy".

The budget for the signage was $2,600 and was funded from the Riel Community Committee Land Dedication Reserve Fund (St. Vital Ward allocation).
