Mayor Scott Gillingham says the City of Winnipeg is committed to supporting evacuees arriving from northern Manitoba as wildfires continue to force thousands from their homes.
“As thousands flee dangerous wildfires, Winnipeg will do what we’ve always done in times of crisis: open our doors and stand together,” said Gillingham. “I’ve spoken with Premier Kinew, and we’re working closely with the Province of Manitoba and the Canadian Red Cross to make sure evacuees have a safe place to stay and the support they need.”
The City has activated its Emergency Operations Centre to coordinate efforts across departments and ensure appropriate facilities and services are ready to receive evacuees arriving in Winnipeg.
City officials remain in close contact with provincial emergency management teams and the Canadian Red Cross to assess shelter requirements, coordinate logistics, and deliver essential services.
“We know many families are arriving with little more than the clothes on their backs,” said Gillingham. “Our job now is to make sure they feel safe, supported, and welcomed.”
Winnipeggers who want to help are encouraged to make a donation to the Canadian Red Cross, which is working around the clock to support evacuees and frontline responders. Donations can be made online at: https://bit.ly/MBwildfire.
