A favourite event celebrating staff’s dedication to improving and maintaining City infrastructure is back after a many-years break.
The Public Works Expo will return May 23 from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Kildonan Park (in the Rainbow Stage parking lot). The event coincides with National Public Works Week and, according to organizers, will this year serve a few purposes.
“We think this is a great opportunity to not only pay tribute to our incredibly hard-working staff but also to introduce young Winnipeggers to the endless potential that exists in public works,” said Jim Berezowsky, Director of Public Works.
“So many high school students are wondering what’s next without every knowing how much we could offer them and their career journey.”
The free event will feature demonstrations and discussions with staff from many areas including:
- Tree care and maintenance
- Graffiti control
- Naturalist services
- Gardening
- Pothole patching
- Traffic signals installation and maintenance
- Traffic monitoring
- General labour
- And more
Attendees can try hands-on activities and get behind-the-scenes looks at the various services the department provides Winnipeggers. They can also make contacts and ask questions about job potential.
While the event focuses on staff recognition and career development, it has something Winnipeggers of all ages and interests.
“We’re looking for this to once again become a community event that Winnipeggers look forward to year after year,” said Berezowsky. “Everyone sees our staff out on the streets and in parks every day – now’s the chance for all of Winnipeg to get up close and personal with who we are and what we do.”
