Winnipeg, MB – At 1:52 p.m. on Thursday, September 9, 2021, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to a monitored fire alarm in a high-rise apartment building in the 400 block of Cumberland Avenue.
When crews arrived on scene, they encountered smoke in the building. A second alarm was called, increasing the number of apparatus and WFPS crew members on scene, due to the potential for high life hazards and fire extension to neighbouring buildings when dealing with a larger structure. An offensive attack was launched and the fire was declared under control at 2:32 p.m.
Some residents of the building were evacuated by crews. Others were asked to shelter in place. No injuries were reported.
The fire was contained to a single suite. Some neighbouring suites sustained smoke and water damage. Most residents were able to re-occupy their suites once crews ventilated the building and completed their work on scene. The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services team was dispatched to the scene to assist several displaced residents in finding alternate accommodations until their suites are deemed safe for re-occupancy.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are currently available.
