Winnipeg, MB - The Kinsmen Sherbrook Pool has officially reopened its doors to provide important health and fitness options to Winnipeg's core area communities, Manitoba Sustainable Development Minister Cathy Cox, Mayor Brian Bowman and Chris Preston, President, Kinsmen Club of Winnipeg announced today.
“The Sherbrook Pool has been an integral part of this community for many years,” said Cathy Cox, Minister of Sustainable Development. “We are pleased that the project is ready to go and people in this neighbourhood are able to enjoy the recreation services it provides.”
“It is with great pleasure that we are announcing the reopening of the Kinsmen Sherbrook Pool, a staple in the community for over 80 years,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “Community gathering places like the Kinsmen Sherbrook Pool are an integral part of what keeps our communities strong and it’s great to finally have this resource available to community members once again.”
Renamed the Kinsmen Sherbrook Pool following a contribution from the Kinsmen Club through Sponsor Winnipeg, funding for the renovation project includes:
- $1 million from the Province through the Manitoba/Winnipeg Infrastructure Agreement,
- Over $421,000 in cost-shared funding through the Building Communities Initiative II (BCI II), a joint agreement between the Province and the City,
- Provincial funding provided through Manitoba Indigenous and Municipal Relations,
- Approximately $1.7 million from the City of Winnipeg, and
- $1 million from the Kinsmen Club of Winnipeg through the Sponsor Winnipeg program.
“The Kinsmen Club of Winnipeg is thrilled to support the Kinsmen Sherbrook Pool. The benefits that a facility like this provides to the community are immeasurable in terms of not only physical wellness but also as a healthy meeting place for members of the local community,” said Chris Preston, President, Kinsmen Club of Winnipeg. “The Kinsmen Club of Winnipeg has been serving the community’s greatest need for over 90 years and we remain proud and committed to that. This investment will service the needs of Winnipeg’s west end and will provide a massive benefit to Winnipeggers of all ages.”
Rehabilitation work included structural repairs to the roof, support beams and pool tank, mechanical repairs to the water service, draining, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system, electrical and fire alarm system upgrades as well as improvements to the change rooms, washrooms and shower facilities, and enhanced universal accessibility of the building’s entrance and main floor washrooms. The Sherbrook Pool was closed in 2012 following inspections that detected structural concerns with the building, which is over 80 years old.

Funding Details
The MWIA is a six-year, $220 million provincial capital funding program providing support for Winnipeg transportation and community recreation infrastructure, funded through the province’s Building Manitoba Fund.
The BCI is a multi-year, cost-shared capital initiative developed jointly by the Manitoba government and the City of Winnipeg. The goal of the funding is to support community revitalization through improvements to local infrastructure in targeted older neighbourhoods and contribute to the vitality, safety and health of communities throughout the city.
Sponsor Winnipeg is a partnership program which provides public-spirited individuals, businesses, corporations, foundations and community groups with opportunities to sponsor a wide variety of City of Winnipeg assets and programs, in return for naming rights, legacy opportunities and other marketing benefits associated with sponsorship of City facilities and services. This continuing program supports the City's commitment to deliver high quality services to the citizens of Winnipeg by generating new revenue sources.
