WINNIPEG - October 24, 2016 - Mayor Brian Bowman issued the following statement on the recommendation by the Winnipeg Police Board’s Police Chief Recruitment Committee that Deputy Chief Danny Smyth be appointed the next Chief of Police for the Winnipeg Police Service:
I want to congratulate Deputy Chief Smyth on being recommended as Winnipeg’s new Chief of Police.
The Chief of Police is an important role, and the person in it plays a critical leadership role in our community. I look forward to working alongside Deputy Chief Smyth in the future, and would like to wish him all the best as he officially begins his tenure next month.
I want to thank the Winnipeg Police Board’s Police Chief Recruitment Committee for their all their work and effort over the last number of months searching for a new Police Chief.
I also want to thank Deputy Chief Art Stannard for his commitment in fulfilling the duties and responsibilities as Acting Chief of Police. This role is very demanding, and Deputy Chief Stannard exhibited strong leadership during this interim period.
