"Paramedics - Delivering quality care through teamwork"

Winnipeg, MB - Paramedics Service Week 2016 is being held across Canada from May 22 to May 29. The week-long awareness week will help inform citizens about the variety of paramedical services provided by the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS). To celebrate the week, the department’s paramedics will participate in a variety of community and educational activities.

The WFPS currently has 707 licensed paramedics on staff who provide citizens with emergency medical services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Tuesday, May 24
What: Paramedics will attend Lord Selkirk School for the official Paramedics Service Week kickoff event.
Where: Lord Selkirk School, 170 Poplar Avenue
When: 9:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.
WFPS members will interact with students at Lord Selkirk School as well as provide a variety of interactive, educational displays about emergency health care and emergency response.

Thursday, May 26
What: 8th Annual Celebration of Life Awards Ceremony
Where: Masonic Memorial Temple, 420 Corydon Avenue
When: 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Invited dignitaries, WFPS members, and civilians will be recognized for their extraordinary service and their contributions to help make Winnipeg a safe community. Mayor Bowman will attend this event. Citizens to be recognized include: Maria Mitousis, Logan Quatember, and Katarina Froese.

Friday, May 27
What: Paramedic Service Week - Children's Day at the Zoo
Where: Assiniboine Park Zoo
When: 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
WFPS in partnership with the Assiniboine Park Zoo will host Lord Selkirk School at Emergency Services Children's Day which will highlight health and safety messages as well as the importance of physical activity and nutrition.

Saturday, May 28
What: Paramedics will attend a Family Fair for Syrian refugee families
Where: North Centennial Recreation and Leisure Facility, 90 Sinclair Street
When: 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Paramedics will attend this event along with other City staff to help new Syrian families learn more about city services. Paramedics will work with Arabic translators to explain proper use of 911 and what to do in a medical emergency.

Sunday, May 29
What: Paramedics will attend the Children’s Hospital Foundation Teddy Bears’ Picnic
Where: Assiniboine Park
When: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
An ambulance, the Major Incident Response Vehicle (MIRV), and the fire safety house will be set up for children to tour, with paramedics on hand to tend to all sick and injured teddy bears.
