About the Service > Guns & Gangs Unit

Guns & Gangs Unit Operations:
The Guns & Gangs Unit’s (G&G) primary mandate is the suppression of street gangs, street gang members, and their related illicit activities within the City of Winnipeg.

This unit utilizes both proactive (preventative) and reactive approaches.  Enforcement and deployment will be intelligence lead and generally be based on identifying areas and or individuals through crime analysis, trends and various forms of intelligence gathering.  Members use overt (uniform) and covert (plain clothes) techniques as required on a case by case basis.  These efforts shall include, but are not limited to:

  • Cruiser car Patrol
  • Gang member court ordered compliance checks
  • Criminal Spot-checks
  • Community safety and support initiatives (GRASP, SPOTLIGHT)
  • Intelligence Gathering
  • Surveillance
  • Undercover operations
  • Youth Intervention Support and referral programs (CPTSD)
  • Application and execution of search warrants

The Guns & Gangs Unit will also initiate project based investigations of limited duration as well as longer term task force initiatives targeting “hot spots” identified through crime analysis.  Cooperation and assistance throughout the various divisions of the Service as it relates to street gang suppression is encouraged.

The Guns & Gangs Unit encourages citizens to report street gang activity in their neighbourhoods, whether it is suspicious behaviour or the actual committing of criminal offences by known or suspected gang members.  Citizens are encouraged to report crimes through regular reporting methods, utilizing 911 for emergency situations or the police non-emergency line at (204) 986-6222.
