On December 9, 2022, the Winnipeg Police Service issued a media release about the illicit manufacturing and trafficking of 3D-printed guns.
The Firearms Investigation and Enforcement Unit (FIEU), with the assistance of the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), determined a criminal network solicited and paid legitimate 3D printer services to manufacture handgun receivers. The 3D-printed parts were assembled into functioning ghost guns and sold to the criminal element.
FIEU continued investigating and identified two individuals believed to be directing the production and trafficking of numerous 3D guns between June 2022 and December 2022.
On December 21, 2022, FIEU attended the Winnipeg Remand Center and executed an arrest Warrant for Jashon Anthony FERNANDO (23).
On January 30, 2023, FIEU attended Headingley Correctional Centre and executed an arrest Warrant for Blake James ELLISON-CRATE (24).
Both were charged globally with Weapons Trafficking x 2 and remained in custody.
3D-printed guns are illegal to manufacture and sell. As with all firearms, they are considered dangerous and potentially lethal.
