Winnipeggers invited to talk residential speed limits

Released: October 18, 2023 at 10:44 a.m.

Winnipeg, MB – Phase 2 of the Reduced-Speed Neighbourhood Pilot is underway and we want to hear from Winnipeggers.

In March 2023, we reduced speeds in four neighbourhoods to learn how such a change could impact peoples’ experiences with safety and traffic over a period of one year.

The speed limit was reduced to 30 km/h in:

  • Bourkevale
  • Tyndall Park (South)

The speed limit was reduced to 40 km/h in:

  • Worthington
  • Richmond West

The pilot will tell us if changing the speed limit changes how fast vehicles actually travel and if lowering the speed limit within a residential area affects neighbourhood livability.

We are now asking pilot area residents about their experiences with the reduced speed limits. We also want to hear from residents in the rest of the city about their thoughts on speed limits and safety.

Two separate surveys are available: one for residents of the four areas where either 30 km/h or 40 km/h speeds are being trialed; and one for residents in the rest of the city.

Survey responses will help us understand both pilot area residents’ experience with the speed limit change and broader perspectives on speed limits in general.

Winnipeggers will also be able to provide to talk about residential speed limits at a series of discussion forums to be held in early 2024.
