Mischief to Property – Arrest: C23-191622

Released: August 15, 2023 at 7:32 a.m.

On August 8, 2023, at approximately 4:20 a.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the 1000 block of McPhillips Street for the report of several males damaging storefront property.

General Patrol officers from the North District attended the property; however, the suspects had already fled. Officers noted extensive damage to the exterior windows of the business.

The Major Crimes Unit assumed the investigation and learned that before this incident, at approximately 1:30 a.m., the suspect attended the location operating a taxi vehicle. A verbal dispute ensued between the suspect and on-site security personnel before he fled, operating the same taxi vehicle. At approximately 4:20 a.m., the suspect returned and proceeded to damage the property windows while attempting to conceal his face. The suspect fled before police arrived.

Through their investigation, investigators identified a suspect involved in both incidents.

On August 11, the Major Crimes Unit members executed a search warrant at the suspect’s residence in the first 100 block of Mosselle Drive and arrested the suspect.

Further investigation linked the suspect to an aggravated assault incident in the 1300 block of McPhillips Street on October 27, 2022. During this incident, a confrontation between two groups in a parking lot escalated with the suspect assaulting a then 27-year-old male victim in the upper body with a machete. The victim conveyed himself to hospital and received medical attention for his injuries.

The suspect was also linked to a road rage incident on March 7, 2023, near Templeton Avenue and Strasbourg Drive. During the incident, the suspect forced the then 30-year-old male victim of the other involved vehicle to stop, exited his vehicle, and threatened the victim while brandishing a knife. No injuries were reported as a result of this incident.

A 23-year-old male from Winnipeg is facing the following charges:

- Mischief Over $5,000

- Disguise with Intent

- Assault with a Weapon x 2

- Possession of a Weapon x 2

- Assault Cause Bodily Harm

He was released on an Undertaking as mandated by the Criminal Code.
