On December 16, 2022, at 6:28 p.m., General Patrol officers responded to a mall in the 1400 block of Portage Avenue for a report of a male armed with a gun. Security staff with the mall had since tracked the male to a nearby restaurant in the 600 block of St. James Street.
Soon after, officers arrived and located a male suspect inside the restaurant. He was taken into custody and found to have a handgun in his possession.
It is believed that the accused had been involved in an altercation at the mall with a male known to him at the mall. During the incident, the accused produced the gun and pointed it at the acquittance. No shots were fired.
Jashon Anthony Fernando, a 23-year-old male of Woodlands, Manitoba, has been charged with:
- Pointing a Firearm
- Possession of Firearm, Restricted/Prohibited Weapon or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order (x2)
- Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
- Carrying Concealed Weapon Prohibited Device or Ammunition
- Fail to Comply with Condition of Release Order
He was detained.
