On October 11, 2020, at 7:24 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a residence in the 400 block of Atlantic Avenue for a report of an injured male.
Upon arrival, officers located a male suffering from serious injuries. He was transported to a hospital in critical condition, where he was pronounced deceased.
The deceased victim has been identified as Gerald Justin Hamelin, a 42-year-old male of Winnipeg.
Update:
Members of the Homicide Unit continued with an extensive investigation. With the assistance of the Forensic Identification Section, a male suspect was ultimately identified.
During the evening on December 15, 2022, the suspect was located in the Chalmers area and taken into custody.
It is believed that the suspect had broken into the residence of the victim (whom he knew as a casual acquittance). A confrontation occurred, and the victim was fatally stabbed.
Payton Corydonlee Stagg, a 21-year-old male of Winnipeg, has been charged with:
- Manslaughter
- Break & Enter with Intent - Dwelling House
He was detained in custody.
