Firearm/Drug - Arrests: C22-286306

Released: December 11, 2022 at 11:40 a.m.

On December 9, 2022, at approximately 8:15 p.m., while responding to an unrelated call for service, officers of the Winnipeg Police Service’s West District were alerted to a male armed with a handgun at a business located in the 1400 block of St. Matthews Avenue.  

Officers located the male suspect, who immediately ran from officers in an attempt to flee. As officers caught and attempted to place the suspect under arrest, the male became combative and produced a handgun from his person. Officers were able to gain control and safely place the male under arrest. An adult female (known to the male) physically attempted to stop officers from making the arrest. She was also arrested by officers and taken into custody.

One officer suffered an upper-body injury during the incident and attended hospital, where he received medical treatment.

Officers seized the following property as evidence from both suspects:

- Springfield Armory .45 Calibre Handgun
- .45 Calibre Magazine containing one .45 round of Ammunition
- Approximately 7 grams of Cocaine (Estimated Street Value = $1,500.00
- Packaging Materials
- Approximately $1,500.00 in currency
- Cellular phone

Julio Cain FRIDAY, 26, of Winnipeg, has been charged with the following offences:

- Carrying Concealed Weapon Prohibited Device or Ammunition
- Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
- Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm with Ammunition
- Possession of Firearm, Restricted/Prohibited Weapon or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order x 2
- Resist Peace Officer
- Assault a Peace Officer with a Weapon x 2

He was detained in police custody.

A 23-year-old female from Winnipeg is facing the following charges:

- Possession of a Scheduled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – COCAINE
- Possession of Proceeds of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000.00
- Obstruct Peace Officer

She was released with an Undertaking as mandated by the Criminal Code.
