On January 24, 2022, at approximately 10:30 p.m., a male attended a parking lot in the 200 block of King Street. He entered the box of a parked truck, stole a jerrycan of gasoline, and proceeded to pour the gas over the vehicle's exterior.
He then attended a nearby business where he poured gas onto the building and a garbage dumpster on the loading dock. The male returned to the truck and broke into it before setting fire to the garbage dumpster.
A resident who lives nearby witnessed the incident and contacted police. A K9 Unit attended, and with the assistance of AIR1, a male suspect was taken into custody in the 500 block of Main Street.
Members of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service attended and extinguished the fire in the dumpster.
Central District General Patrol officers continued with the investigation.
Darren William Alexander Perchak, a 35-year-old male of Winnipeg, has been charged with:
- Arson Causing Damage to Property
- Theft Under $5,000
- Mischief Under $5,000/Obstruct in Enjoyment
He was detained.
