Shooting – Arrests: C22-007209

Released: January 12, 2022 at 8 a.m.

On January 11, 2022, at approximately noon, Winnipeg Police responded to a report of a male shot in the 600 block of Maryland Street. Multiple police units were dispatched, including General Patrol, TST, Traffic, and K9, as well as Winnipeg Paramedic Services.
The victim, an adult male, was transported to hospital in stable condition with a gunshot wound to his lower extremity.

Officers were initially told that the victim was shot by one of two unknown males they met in the lane. A subsequent investigation by the Major Crimes Unit determined the following: three males (19, 18 and 17-years old), all known to each other, confronted two unidentified males in the rear lane of the 600 block of Maryland Street. The 19-year-old pulled out a concealed handgun and accidentally shot himself in the process. The handgun was then taken to a suite in the area and hidden. The two unidentified males fled.

Investigators obtained a search warrant for the suite and located two firearms and 40 various rounds of ammunition.

The 18-year-old and the 17-year-old youth face charges of Store Firearm or Restricted Weapon Contrary to Regulations. The 19-year-old remains in hospital.
